Swim Australia Advisory Committee

The key aims of the Swim Australia Advisory Committee are:

The development of strategies to represent the best interests for Swim School members

To have input into Swim Australia Education courses and opportunities to build the swim teacher skills and management skills throughout Australia.

Mentor and provide advice and advocacy for Swim School Members.

Provide leadership and representation to Swim Schools regarding industry best practice for Swim School development pathways and initiatives.

Provide expert recommendations to the industry and Swim Australia staff.

Provide input into other areas of expertise that will provide added value to the Swim Schools Membership of Swim Australia

Collectively the Advisory Committee brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as representatives of Swim Schools and the aquatic industry.

To support the Advisory Committee are the newly formed ACE's groups (Aquatic Community Experts) with over 25 industry leaders and Swim Schools who will provide input in their specialty areas such as disability, inclusion, business, babies & toddlers, and small swim schools.

  • Gary Toner
  • Executive Officer, Swim Australia

    Gary Toner returned to Australia in 2016 to take up the leadership role of Executive Officer, Swim Australia having been involved in swimming at all levels for over 35 years with a successful career in aquatics in both Australia and the USA. Certified by Austswim in 1980 as a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety, Gary went on to manage Swim Schools in Australia and the USA. During his tenure in the USA, Gary managed various facilities of all sizes, providing services that included swim lessons, coaches, lifeguards, facility maintenance, construction and repair, and chemical delivery. Gary sat on the Cincinnati Red Cross Water Safety Committee for 10 years and was Chairman for 3 years. Gary was also on the board of directors for Kentucky / Ohio American Pool and Spa Association. Gary is a member of ASCTA.

  • Head Coach & Aquatics Manager, 5 Star Swim Schools

    An accomplished and driven professional, Debby has a passion for all things swimming. As a business owner, head coach, active teacher and course presenter Debby has expertise across a broad range of Aquatic Industry issues.

  • Darren Lange
  • Director, Darren Lange Swimming Academy, QLD.

    Darren started his swim school in Toowoomba in 1994 while still competing for Australia. His business continues to grow and he now operates 2 swim schools and a retail Pool and Spa store. Darren represented Australia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and was awarded with gold and silver medals at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. Darren was on the Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Darren maintains a high community involvement.

  • Narelle Simpson
  • Director, NS Swim School, NSW

    Narelle has been involved in the Aquatic Industry for over 37 years. Narelle has been a NSW Institute Coach for 7 years and over the past 6 years coached Olympic swimmers and major Australian teams. She is passionate about teaching swimming and water safety education.

  • Simon Watkins
  • Director of Swimming, MLC School, NSW.

    Simon hails from Wales where he managed Swim Schools and was Swimming Development Officer for Wales before moving to Australia. Simon writes a regular journal article on swimming for the quarterly ASCTA/Swim Australia Swimming in Australia journal.

  • Nancy Shaw
  • Owner, Holsworthy Aquatic Swim School, NSW.

    Nancy has been a member of Swim Australia since 1997, presented at numerous conferences and part of many special interest groups. Nancy has been heavily involved with the Fitness Industry Award input for Swim Schools and an advocate for the industry.
